Danielle Lippold: I stand with Planned Parenthood

Planned ParentPlanned Parenthood is getting enormous backlash for supposedly breaking certain federal laws involving abortion. One of these is the sale of human fetal tissue, which is not illegal in the United States. Women having abortions can sometimes choose to donate fetal tissue for scientific research, and abortion providers do not go through with these donations without their explicit consent.

Unfortunately, Planned Parenthood is in the midst of losing vital funding for their non-profit organization because of these accusations.

According to their website, “Planned Parenthood is one of the nation’s leading providers of high-quality, affordable health care for women, men, and young people, and the nation’s largest provider of sex education.” Furthermore, they provide breast exams, which they may not be able to provide if they are defunded. As a result, many woman and men will go untested for breast cancer, and deaths caused by this diease will be on the rise. Planned parenthood provide these services for low-income families. However, if they lose their funding, and have to eventually shut down because of it, those low-income people will have nowhere to turn for healthcare or contraceptives.

They also provide pregnancy prevention and STD tests for adolescents who feel they cannot tell their parents they are sexually active. If aid stops coming, there will be an increase in pregnancies among teenagers. Yet, only three percent of all Planned Parenthood health amenities are abortion services. Planned Parenthood’s mission is prevention, not abortion.
