Jackie Hinrichs: Innocently convicted

2015 was the year of the innocents. A record number of people who were jailed were set free after serving time for a crime they did not commit. One hundred forty-nine people have spent on average 15 years in prison while innocent. Convictions ranged from drug crimes to  murder convictions. Five of these innocent convicts were awaiting an execution date and were saved last year when courts ruled they did not belong in prison in the first place.
Of the people wrongly convicted for homicides, an NBC report said that “more than two-thirds were minorities, including half who were African American”. The justice system will lose a lot of trust with those innocent victims and their families.
